Abstract

VALDES JIMENEZ, Jesús et al. Reintervenciones en Cirugía General. Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2001, vol.40, n.3, pp. 201-204. ISSN 1561-2945.

76 patients reoperated on between 1996 and 1999 at "Comandante Manuel Fajardo" Teaching Hospital were studied. 52.3 % were females and 50 % were over 70. 75 % of the cases were urgently operated on for the first time, with predominance of mechanical intestinal occlusion and digestive tube neoplasias. 98.7 % of the reoperations were performed after the sixth day of the initial operation. The main causes of the reoperations were: residual peritonitis due to supurative processes or perforations (22.3 %), deshicence of the gastrointestinal suture (18.5 %) and intraabdominal hemorrhages (17.1 %). The remarkable risk factors were: age (over 61), urgent operation and personal history of diseases (cancer, diabetes, malnutrition). The surgical mortality of the patients that were reoperated on was 20.6 % compared with 0.2 % of the total of operations performed during the 4 years under study
