Abstract

Postsurgical infections, known for centuries, are a common problem nowadays. With the objective of describing epidemiological aspects and main preventive measures and analyzing ethical dilemmas involved in surgical site infection prevention, we made a national literature review on this topic. Risk factors of these infections, a basic element to work out preventive strategies based on best scientific evidence, were described. It is essential to inform the patient and his/her family of the risks and their contribution to prevention, the preventive attitude of professionals related to the care of patients and their co-operation with infection surveillance. Ethical reflection on the professional performance to this topic, the strenghthening of continuing education programs that provide health professionals with the best scientific evidence on the control and prevention of surgical site infections, the preparation of standardized working procedures and the encouragement to surgical service medical professionals and those responsible for infection control in healthcare institutions to work together
