Abstract

PORTIE FELIX, Antonio et al. Surgical treatment of pathological obesity. Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2011, vol.50, n.2, pp. 229-239. ISSN 1561-2945.

The obesity is the chronic non-communicable disease with a higher rate of growth in past 20 years. It is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, cardiovascular and respiratory affections, infertility, sexual and functional impotence, metabolic syndrome, load joint disorders and some types of cancer (breast, colon, prostate). The metabolic bariatric surgery is the surgical treatment more effective for the morbid obesity at long- and medium-term and not the pharmacologic treatment and the isolated diets. The aim of present historical review of the international literature on the evolution of surgical techniques of the bariatric surgery (malabsorption techniques, gastric restrictive techniques and mixed techniques), is to make available to those interested in this subject, a valuable therapeutic tool to be rationally used.

Keywords : Morbid obesity; metabolic bariatric surgery; obesity surgical treatment.
