A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted in 3 health areas of the municipality of Santa Clara from January to December, 1999, with the aim of determining the periodontal conditions of the surveyed and to establish its links with the existing local and systemic factors. The prevalence and severity of the periodontal disease was determined by applying the index of need of periodontal treatment in the community and its categorizations were related to local and general factors explored during the study. The prevalence was high related to the age and to the degree of oral hygiene. Smoking was associated with the already established disease, whereas dental caries were associated with incipient states. Most of the cases with malocclusions were sick and diabetes was the systemic pathology most associated with periodontal disease.
