Abstract

ALFONSO BETANCOURT, Natividad M et al. Oral health of the population seen at "Plaza de la Revolution" and "Héroes del Moncada" polyclinics from 1999 to 2001. Rev Cubana Estomatol [online]. 2004, vol.41, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-297X.

With the purpose of evaluating the oral health status of the population cared for by the Dental School, a cross-sectional descriptive study was made on 3 938 inhabitants from the physician´s offices No. 1,4, 6, 8 and 9 in "Plaza de la Revolution" polyclinics and the physician´s offices No 27-1, 31-3., 41-2 and 103-3 in "Heroes del Moncada" polyclinics. These physician´s offices were selected by a conglomerate sampling and a random stratified sample was taken from each office. The stratification variable was the age of the studied persons. The selection of each stratum was based on a fixed index proportional to the size of each age group, therefore the final sample was the following: 0-4 years age group =278; 5-11 age group =311; 12-14 =215; 15-34 ? 1 089; 35-59 _ 1 209 and 60 years and over group = 836 inhabitants. Skin and mucose alterations were not oral health problems. ATM condition was good; these disorders were not significant in the studied population, although there are significant differences among the age groups. As to dental caries, CEO was low in primary dentition whereas COP is high in permanent dentition, all depending on the number of obturations and lost teeth. The behavior of malocclusion is favorable, with predominance of slight types. Periodontal disease prevails in 35-59 y age group, with significant differences among the groups. All the studied problems increase with the age. Regarding assistance requirements, primary care was predominant from the orthodontic viewpoint whereas secondary care requirements were higher in the management of periodontal diseases. The most affected group was the 35-59 years in prosthetic treatment, but differences were significant among the age groups. On the other hand, requirements for treatment of oral diseases increase with the age.
