A fast methods of thin layer chromatography for the qualitative and quantitative determination of vitamine E (a -tocopherol) in samples of Pinus caribaea Morelet and Eucalyptus sp. is presented. The ethereal extracts were chromatographied in plates preelaborated with silica gel, for which chloroform was used as a mobile phase. Quantification was carried out by densitometric detection of the compound stains, using a computer controlled system in the modes of reflexion absorbability at a wave longitude of 280 nm. This paper is the first report about the presence of this substance in Cuba. Vitamin E has been found in concentrations of 177 and 2 400 mg/kg of dry drug in pine and eucalyptus respectively.
