The micromorphological description of Cissus sicoydes L. (ipecacuanha) is presented and the preliminary phytochemical composition is summarized. Aminoacids, fatty compounds and flavonoids, which have not been previously reported in bibliography, are detected in the whole aerial part of the plant. It is proved that the type of drying does not alter the compositon of the drug and guidelines are set on its stability. It is also demonstrated that the plant does not have toxic or antiviral effects against the virus of influenza A in victoria H3N2 and WSN (H1N1) strains for the conditons under which the study was developed.
