Abstract

HERVET PERERA CORDOVA, Wilmer; GONZALEZ MESA, Leonora  and  PAYO HILL, Armando Luis. Secondary metabolites and antimicrobial activity of Pluchea carolinensis. Rev Cubana Farm [online]. 2006, vol.40, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2988.

A phytochemical screening was carried out in the leaves of the species Pluchea carolinensis Jacq. G. Don in Sweet, and they were subjected to fractioning by using increasing polarity solvents. The presence of flavonoids was confirmed in each of the extracts obtained, and the antimicrobial activity against 7 microorganisms was evaluated. The presence of flavonoids was detected in CHCl3, AcOEt and n-BuOH extracts, which presented antibacterial activity. The CHCl3 extract showed biological activity against Bacillus subtilis at a concentration of 1 000 µg/mL, whereas the AcOEt and n-BuOH extracts had positive results against Staphylococcus aureus y Bacillus subtilis bacteria at the same concentration

Keywords : Phytochemical screening; flavonoids; antimicrobial activity; Pluchea carolinensis; Asteraceae.
