Abstract

It is known that hyperosmolar coma or nonketotic hyperglycemic states (NKHS) is a severe complication of diabetes mellitus and that it si still nowadays a challenge for the emergency care personnel due to its difficult management and to the serious consequences resulting from a late or wrong diagnosis. That's why it is one of the most severe urgencies of the diabetic patients. The most important aspects of its diagnosis, treatment and complications were dealth with in this review. Special emphasis was made on the 3 fundamental milestones of the treatment, namely, the administration of liquid, administration of insulin and potassium intake. We consider that this paper may serve as a guide to approach this serious affection.
