Abstract

GONZALEZ CORTINAS, Modesto et al. Gastroenteritis eosinofílica: Reporte del primer caso en Cuba. Consideraciones patogénicas. Rev cubana med [online]. 2001, vol.40, n.1, pp. 78-84. ISSN 1561-302X.

It is known that eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare disorder in which there is a patched variable infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract wall by mature eosinophils, and symptoms are correlated with the pattern of infiltration and the affected site. Frequently, there are patients with mixed forms of the disease, the less common pattern is the predominantly subserose form found in less than 10 % of cases, with eosinophil-rich ascitic liquid. Although the pathogenesis is not clear, several characteristics suggest food allergy. A 59-years-old patient presented with a picture of eosinophilic ascitis, abdominal pain, vomit and diarrheas, she also had positive food allergy skin tests and high IgE titers. Other causes of eosinophilic ascitis were excluded and it was concluded that the disease was eosinophilic gastroenteritis (Klein type III). The relationship between eosinophils and various cytokines as well as the function of inflammation mediators produced by both of them in this type of disease was explained
