Abstract

DE LA PAZ GARCIA DE LA OSA, Mercedes; RODRIGUEZ-OJEA MENENDEZ, Arturo Pedro  and  PINO ALFONSO, Pedro Pablo. Oxigenoterapia en medio hospitalario. Rev cubana med [online]. 2002, vol.41, n.2, pp. 93-97. ISSN 1561-302X.

It is known that oxygen therapy of wide use requires a rational use, according to the results of the clinical evaluation of the patient. A study of 115 patients admitted in the "Benéfico Jurídico" Hospital was carried out in order to assess the rationality of the oxygen treatment. Aspects such as base diagnosis, criteria for its use and methods to evaluate its efficiency were analyzed. It was found that lung cancer (18.3 %) and the chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (17.4 %) were the diseases that motivated more indications. The clinical oximetric criterion was the most used for the indication (48.6 %) and for retirement (55.7 %) in the absence of haemogasometry. The treatment was monitored in 50 % of the cases and fails in the administration were found in 35.3 %. It was concluded that though pulse oximetry does not substitute haemogasometry, it proves to be very useful in our working conditions.
