Abstract
GUTIERREZ MAYDATA, Alfredo. Oxidantes en el humo del cigarro y enfermedades cardiopulmonares. Rev cubana med [online]. 2003, vol.42, n.5, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-302X.
It is known that cigarette smoke affects numerous organs and causes diverse diseases. The cardiovascular and the pulmonary systems are particularly affected due to the high oxidative stress imposed by the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that are released or produced by the direct action of cigarette smoke. Smokers have a large number of neutrophiles in the respiratory tract that may contribute to increase the free radicals. In this paper, a review is made on the known molecular mechanisms that may sustain the pathogeny of the most common cardiopulmonary diseases linked to the oxidative action of the components of cigarrete smoke.
