Effects of smoking on 24-hour arterial blood pressure - evaluation by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) A bibliographic review on the effect of smoking and the elevation of blood pressure was made aimed at showing the usefulness of the ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) for scientific research and for contributing to the diagnosis and therapeutic evaluation. It has been proved that the ABPM reflects the lesion of the organs that are usually its target better than the measurements of the family physician's office. Details on the results attained by various studies on this tool of evaluation of blood pressure were exposed. Emphasis was made on the effect of smoking on the increase of blood pressure measured by different methods. Further papers on the use of ABPM will be able to give a better definition of smoking as a risk factor or not for arterial hypertension.
