Abstract

GUEVARA GARCIA, Mariela et al. New therapeutic approaches in ischaemic stroke. Rev cubana med [online]. 2005, vol.44, n.1-2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-302X.

A bibliographic review of the new therapeutic targets for treating ischaemic stroke was made. The main studies conducted so far were taken into consideration and the most important data were provided. These new approaches are aimed at improving or restoring the regional blood flow by using antithrombotic and thrombolytic drugs, and at preventing neuronal death due to ischaemia, as well as the damage induced by reperfusion, through the administration of drugs known as neuroprotective. It was concluded that many of the tested agents proved to be efficient in the experimental studies with animals; however, up to now there have been no concluding results in human beings, although there are some encouraging data about some studies.

Keywords : Ischemic stroke; therapeutic targets; clinical trials; nueroprotective drugs; ischemic cascade.
