Abstract

PEREZ VALDES, Alejandro R. et al. Use of antithrombotic drugs. Rev cubana med [online]. 2007, vol.46, n.4, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-302X.

80 % of the total of cerebrovascular diseases are ischemic strokes, and the antithrombotic drugs play an important role in the attention to patients with this disease. As the Stroke Units are relatively new structures in the hospitals, the frequency and mode of use of these drugs are not known. It is known that the election of the type of drug to be used, platelet antiaggregants or anticoagulants, depends on the identification of the mechanism causing stroke and on the particularities of each patient. 275 cases, of whom 72 % had ischemic stroke, were studied. Antithrombotic drugs were used in 83 % of them. It was found that the aetiology was cardioembolic in 23 % of the ischemic strokes and that they received treatment with anticoagulants. Warfarin was the most used drug, whereas auricular fibrillation was the main reason to indicate these drugs. Most of the patients with ischemic stroke of noncardioembolic aetiology were treated with platelet antiaggregants. Aspirin proved to be the most used.

Keywords : Stroke; anticoagulants; platelet antiaggregants; ischemia.
