Introduction: In the World Day of the Fight Against the High Blood Pressure a cross-sectional study was conducted in: 2 workshops, a farming-market and 2 units of the National Health System, 332 (60,36 %) subjects and also in 3 working center from surrounding areas of our hospital, 218 (39,64 %) subjects, for a total of 550 subjects aged 18 or more of both sexes that in a voluntary way answered to a survey and allowed the blood pressure (BP) measurement. Objectives: To determine the frequency of hypertensives (known and new), to assess the control level of diseased under treatment, if blood pressure was measured in the primary health care unit at least during the past 12 months as well as the excess weight. The cooperation to increase of perception level and risk of high blood pressure (HBP) in general population within the setting of World Day of the Fight Against the High Blood Pressure. Methods: The blood pressure (BP) was measured according the criteria and recommendations of the Technical National Commission Advisory of the High Blood Pressure Program. Data were registered in a form containing the following variables: age, sex, height, weight if they know to be hypertensives, if they are receiving drug therapy, if the BP was measure during the past 12 months and the figures founded. A database was created and SPSS statistical system of Window 2007 was used. Results: Results were expressed in absolute frequencies and percentages. Subject distribution was similar in the three age groups. From the 550 polled persons, 190 (34,5%) know on its high blood pressure, in 35 (10,5%) there were figures of BP over 140/90 mmHg for a high blood pressure prevalence of 40,9%. The 87,3% of polled person expressed on its BP measurement in the primary health care unit at least during the past 12 months. From them, the 67,5% was not hypertensive. From the 160 known and new hypertensives, 99 (61,9%) had controlled its disease. The 46% of subjects had excess weight/obese (55,6%) in hypertensive and 39,4% in the normotensive ones) a figure similar to the 42,6% of the national mean. Conclusions: The celebration of the World Day of Fight against the High Blood Pressure helps to increase the level of risk perception of this disease, to corroborate that the active screening may to detect non-diagnosed cases, to increase the knowledge on the control level achieved in hypertensives treated and that the excess weight / obesity is more frequent in the hypertensive ones.
