Abstract

MONTES DE OCA MEGIAS, Elizabeth et al. Sigmoidoscopy: A useful alternative for colorectal cancer screening. Rev cubana med [online]. 2013, vol.52, n.3, pp. 197-208. ISSN 0034-7523.

Colorectal cancer is a health problem which incidence and mortality are increasing, even at early ages. Flexible sigmoidoscopy is one of its screening methods, but its use is a controversial topic because it is defined by some people as a primary screening method, while others do not accept it because of the impossibility of the total exploration of the colon. On this respect, a literature review was made to know the usefulness of sigmoidoscopy in the reduction of colorectal cancer incidence and the mortality caused by this neoplasia.

Keywords : colorectal cancer; colon cancer; screening methods; screening strategies; sigmoidoscopy.
