Abstract

MARTINEZ FERNANDEZ, Liodelvio  and  TORRADO NAVARRO, Yeimy Paola. Chikungunya fever. Rev cubana med [online]. 2015, vol.54, n.1, pp. 74-96. ISSN 1561-302X.

Chikungunya fever is an emerging disease that has spread explosively from Africa to the islands of the Indian Ocean, India, Southeast Asia, Europe, and, more recently, to the Americas, where it arrived via the Caribbean islands causing a major epidemic. Its causes, clinical features and diagnosis were reviewed in the literature. It was confirmed that there is no effective specific treatment or vaccine available yet, thus preventing infection through vector control and prevention of mosquito bites are the best measures to contain its effects. It is suggested to be prepared for the arrival of this disease in the country and at its presence, try to detect early bearer of the virus to prevent transmission because there really is no specific treatment.

Keywords : CHIKV; arbovirus; virus spread; diagnosis; treatment and prevention.
