Abstract

AGARICA AGUILAR, Yunier  and  CURBELO LOPEZ, Michel. Prognostic value of glycemia in the neurological evolution of diabetic patients with cerebrovascular disease. Rev. Cuban de Med [online]. 2022, vol.61, n.4  Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 1561-302X.

Introduction:

Diabetes mellitus is one of the diseases that increase a person's risk of suffering a stroke. People with diabetes have three times the risk of stroke and a worse prognosis when blood glucose levels are high.

Objective:

To describe the neurological evolution in diabetic patients with acute ischemic cerebrovascular disease.

Methods:

A descriptive study was carried out in diabetic patients admitted to Hospital Enrique Cabrera with acute ischemic cerebrovascular disease.

Results:

A total of 118 patients were studied. The male sex, white skin color and the ages between 60 and 69 years were the most affected. It was evidenced, with a statistically significant relationship, that elevated blood glucose values at the time of ischemic cerebrovascular disease diagnosis were associated with the torpid neurological evolution of the disease (p = 0.0007).

Conclusions:

Hyperglycemia on admission is associated with a worse neurological prognosis in diabetic patients admitted for an acute ischemic stroke.

Keywords : ischemic brain vascular disease; diabetes mellitus; glycemia.
