Abstract

Introduction:

There are a number of studies on systemic lupus erythematosus and vitamin D, which relate its deficiency and various clinical aspects. It has been postulated that it is one of the environmental factors that can trigger autoimmunity.

Objective:

To evaluate the serum levels of vitamin D in a group of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and the relationship with the activity of the disease.

Methods:

A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 75 patients diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus, the clinical records were reviewed. The variables sex, race, age, clinical manifestations, vitamin D levels in blood were recorded, and disease activity was measured using the SLEDAI instrument.

Results:

The female sex (88%), the age group from 40 to 49 years with the highest percentage (26.7%) and the white race (73.3%) predominated. Vitamin D insufficiency was demonstrated (60%) with a mean of 38.5 and a standard deviation of 8.5; the most frequent laboratory abnormalities were leukocyturia (52%) and hematuria (33.3%). Mild and moderate activity (60%) and vitamin D insufficiency (62.2%) were related. No significant statistical association was found between high activity levels and vitamin D levels.

Conclusions:

Serum levels of vitamin D were evaluated; it turned out that white women with the disease presented low levels of vitamin D and disease activity, although no significant association was demonstrated.
