It is conducted a study of 155 children from the Emergency Room of the "José Ramón Martínez" Teaching Hospital in Guanajay. These patients had a diagnosis of bronchial asthma and were admitted in the Respiratory Service to identify possible complications according to the clinical judgement of the physician. Atelectasis was detected as a complication in 12.9 % of the patients, and its clinical manifestations were masked by those of the bronchial asthma crisis. The right lung was the most affected and the lobular form was the predominant variety. It was detected an overdiagnosis of inflammatory pneumopathies that was confused with atelectasis, resulting in the indiscriminated use antimicrobial agents.
