Abstract

PEREZ DEL CAMPO, Yardelis et al. Síndrome hemolítico urémico: Aspectos epidemiológicos y patogénicos. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2000, vol.72, n.3, pp. 203-213. ISSN 1561-3119.

A review was made on the present aspects of the epidemiology and pathogeny of hemolytic uremic syndrome which is the result of a number of etiologic and pathogenic factors. Several Escherichia coli strains which produce a cytotoxin for Vero cells, called verotoxin or Shiga-like toxin(SL-T) have been isolated. This toxin, particularly that produced by Escherichia coli serotype =157: H7 has been related to sporadic and epidemic cases and less frequently serotypes 0111, 026 and 0113 act through release of exotocins into blood stream. The first phenomenum in the pathogenesis of the hemolytic syndrome is vascular endothelium injure that as a side effect generates a series of phenomena such as adhesion, platelet aggregation and fibrin deposists through several mediators; the final result would be the formation of thrombi in microcirculation: the thrombotic microangiopathy.
