Abstract

DIAZ-ARGUELLES RAMIREZ-CORRIA, Virginia; GONZALEZ MUSTELIER, Alina; PUPO PORTAL, Lourdes  and  MONTERREY GUTIERREZ, Pedro. Desbalance energético proteico en lactantes durante el primer año de vida*. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2004, vol.76, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3119.

The feeding of infants during the first year of life has a great influence on the further growth and development, mainly on the infant with very low birth weight. The objective of this paper was to characterize the intake of energy and macronutrients in a group of newborn infants with a weight under 1 800 g and to compare it with a term control group to know if there was an adequate consumption during the first year of life. To this end, a cohort study was conducted in 25 newborn infants with a birth weight under 1 800 g and 34 weeks of gestational age at "Ramón Gonzalez Coro" Gynecoobstetric Hospital, in Havana City, from January, 2000, to January, 2001. 25 term newborn infants with good weight were also included in the study as a control group. A 3-day dietetic survey was done at 4, 6, 9 and 12 months of age to evaluate the intake of macronutrients. Data were processed by the program for the evaluation of food consumption. (CERES). The energy intake was adequate, but with a marked disbalance of macronutrients in both groups at the expense of the protein consumption that was excessive (5 g/kg/day) during the first year of life and a low energy density of the diet. A review of ablactation in infants, of the kind of milk used during the first months of breastfeeding, and of the food habits of the population is necessary in order to improve its quality during the first year of life.

Keywords : NUTRITION, MACRONUTRIENTS INTAKE.
