Abstract

COLLADO MADURGA, Ana María et al. A bioethical approach to childhood pain. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2012, vol.84, n.3, pp. 275-281. ISSN 0034-7531.

Pain is an uncomfortable personal experience that alters the life of the individual suffering it; however, childhood pain is a forgotten event. If a professional is not updated in this topic, the quality of his/her work is questionable, and this has an effect on the care of patient and becomes an ethical problem. This paper suggested the assessment of bioethical aspects related to treatment of childhood pain, by making emphasis on those situations that determine inadequate pain management. A literature review of the last five years was made by using health science subject headings. Pain relief is considered a fundamental right of the individual, but the pediatric pain in Cuba and worldwide is a neglected topic as a whole and is virtually inexistent in the medical curricula, with myths and wrong beliefs hindering the adequate pain management.

Keywords : childhood pain; bioethics.
