Abstract

OBJECTIVES: to determine the incidence, the clinical features of girls and adolescents presenting with Müller malformations diagnosed in Gynecology service and treatment result. METHODS: we made a cross-sectional and prospective study in girls and adolescents diagnosed with Müller malformations seen in "Isaka Gasoby" Maternity Hospital of Niamey, Niger Republic between 1999 and 2003. RESULTS: from a total of 1637 girls and adolescents seen from gynecologic problems, in 69 cases we confirmed presence of a Müller malformation, with a incidence of 4, 2%. The more frequent consultation causes included: amenorrhea (44, 4%), and pelvic pain (24, 6%). The more frequent malformations were: transverse and longitudinal septum and imperforate hymen. Physical examination and the echography were the key for diagnosis. The 95, 1% of patients underwent surgical treatment: vaginal septum resection, hymenoplasty, vaginoplasty. Renal and urinary anomalies were present in 12 patients. CONCLUSIONS: vaginal malformations were predominant. Amenorrhea was the more frequent cause of consultation. Vaginal septum was the more diagnosed alteration.
