Low-birth weight is a significant marker to assess the prenatal care results with a negative repercussion on perinatal disease. OBJECTIVES: to assess the behavior of some maternal variables and its repercussion on the low-birth weight and infant mortality. METHODS: a retrospective and descriptive study was conducted in all low-weight neonates; cohort includes 61 newborns with a weight under 2500g. Variables were reviewed in relation with mother and neonate in medical records and surveys designed according situation. RESULTS: we noted that Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR) was significant with a incidence of 59%; this was related to mother age under 20 years. Preeclampsia and vaginal sepsis has the greater percentage of pathologies dependent and associated with pregnancy according the low-birth weight. Incidence of IUGR and prematurity was greater between the 32 and the 34 weeks and a fetal weight of 1501 to 2000 g. IUGR was frequent in the low-birth weight and prematurity in the obese patients. It was demonstrated that the low-birth weight has a negative repercussion on infant mortality. CONCLUSIONS: preeclampsia stood out as main cause of IURG. Vaginal sepsis was a frequent cause of preterm labor in our study universe. According this paper, preterm labor is considered as a main cause of infant mortality.
