Abstract

A mass screening was conducted among the military personnel over 35 that attended the "Dr. Luis Diaz Soto" Higher Institute of Military Medicine to uhave a checkup. Fecal occult blood was detected by the inmunoenzimatic technique (ELISA). Of a total of 408 individuals, 39 were positive of whom 21 were examined, including the endoscopic study of the colon. The most important findings were: polyps in the signoid colon and rectum (33.3 %), diverticulosis (33.3 %) and angiodisplasia (13.3 %). 6 subjects were false positive. Those patients carrying colon polyps underwent endoscopic polypectomy and all of them proved to be tubular adenomas. It was shown the usefulness of this method to detect colon premalignant lesions in asymptomatic persons.
