Research is a source of human knowledge. Health professionals, urged by the rhythm of modern times, feel the need of tackling contemporary clinical and emergency research, with the purpose of reading, understanding and making research studies. This article presents in a briefly way the principles of research methodology in medical emergency. It begins by a concrete question that is representative of the objectives, then followed by basic concepts for dealing with variables, their best selection, interpretation and management. Emphasis is made on the selection of the mathematical program and its correlation with the source of variables and the formation of database. Finally, some classifications of mathematical processing methods of the variables to express the end results are presented.
