A historical analysis of the evolution of medicine, of the different trends in the social and scientific settings where it was developed, as well as of the integration of the somatic and social factors starting from the development of natural sciences, their specialties, and the upsurge of the specializations, in particular psychiatry and the exercise of liaison psychiatry, was made. Likewise, it was made an analysis of the historical development and evolution of its practice in the different models of attention it has passed through, its difficulties and possibilities, the challenge for the health professionals in the health paradigm that have to meet the requirements of a completely different health cadre for which a qualitative leap in their performance is required.
