Abstract

ARPA GAMEZ, Ángel et al. Metabolic syndrome as a risk factor in the cerebrovascular disease. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2005, vol.34, n.4, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3046.

An observational prospective study was conducted to corroborate that the metabolic syndrome is associated as a risk factor with cerebrovascular disease. Patients were divided into 2 groups: the first group was composed of patients admitted due to cerebrovascular disease, whereas the other group (control) was made up of patients admitted for presenting other clinical diseases. The presence of metabolic syndrome was determined in both groups according to the criteria of the Adult Treatment Panel III. A higher presence of the metabolic syndrome was observed among the patients that presented cerebrovascular disease with an odd ratio of 9.803 (CI of 95 %: 8.25-11.05). The occlusive cerebrovascular disease of the carotid territory predominated among these patients. It was concluded that the metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for cerebrovascular disease, mainly for the ischemic type.

Keywords : Metabolic syndrome; cerebrovascular disease; risk factor.
