Abstract

CORONADO MESTRE, Ramón et al. Human herpesvirus 6 encephalitis. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2006, vol.35, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3046.

A case of human herpesvirus 6 encephalitis seen at "Dr Carlos J. Finlay" Military Hospital, characterized by acute febrile condition for 3 days associated to vesicle lesions, altered state of consciousness and signs of neurological focalization. A lumbar puncture and a cytochemical study were performed on the patient; this study showed bacterial meningoencephalitis for which a specific treatment was indicated. The progression of the patient´s condition at the intensive care unit was torpid, with mechanical ventilation, convulsive status, hypotension and multigerm pulmonary sepsis. New studies of crebrospinal fluid and nuclear magnetic resonance of the brain confirmed human herpesvirus 6 infection. The patient was treated with Ganciclovir for 20 days. The recovery was satisfactory. A literature review on this entity was made and the particularities of this case were debated.

Keywords : Encephalitis; herpesvirus 6; polymerase chain reaction; Ganciclovir; progression.
