RODRIGUEZ GURRI, Daniel  and  GONZALEZ EXPOSITO, Armando. Characterization of patients with diabetic foot. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2013, vol.42, n.2, pp. 173-180. ISSN 0138-6557.

Introduction: diabetic foot is considered a health problem worldwide because of the high number of admissions to hospital services. Objective: to characterize patients with diabetic foot. Methods: a descriptive retrospective study was conducted during a period of 15 months in those cases who were admitted to the Department of Angiology and Vascular Surgery of the Military Hospital of Holguín with a diagnosis of diabetic foot according to Wagner classification. Results: diabetic foot represented the 53 % of the total of admissions in the service; the average age of patients was 64,8 years; a predominance among 51 and 60 years of age was observed and more often in grades 1 and 2 of Wagner classification, with 25 patients in each ones. Neuroinfectious diabetic foot, according to the classification by Mc Cook was highlighted, representing a 38,35 % of the total. 41 operations were performed; about half of them were necrotomies with a poor use of vascular surgical procedures. Conclusions: patients were characterized as being between 51 and 60 years, with Type 2 diabetes on admission, smokers, hypertensive and suffering from hypercholesterolemia. There was a tendency to perform conservative operations.

Keywords : diabetic foot; amputation; vascular surgical procedures; necrotomy.
