Abstract

FABRE, Yolexis; HENRIQUEZ, Mónica; CAMA, Juan M  and  ALONSO, Roberto. Association between glycemia and some productive and healthy indicators in swine breeding. Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2014, vol.36, n.2, pp. 111-117. ISSN 0253-570X.

A study was developed in a swine multiplier center of Mayabeque, with the objective of evaluating the association between glycemia and some productive and healthy indicators. Newborn piglets were selected for controlling blood glucose levels, birth weight, weaning weight, daily average weight gaining, rectal temperature and mortality. Glycemia levels were measured at birth and three days later. Multiple regression tests and analysis of descriptive statistics were carried out for processing data. The results revealed that blood average glucose levels at birth (4,02 mmol/l) were lower than at 72 hours later (5,72 mmol/l). A 45, 24% of hypoglycemic breeding and a 23% of low weight at birth were also observed. The regression analysis showed the influence of blood glucose levels on the birth weight, weaning weight, rectal temperature and mortality.

Keywords : hypoglycemia; newborn pigs; productive and healthy indicators.
