Abstract

GARCIA-MENDEZ, Melisa  and  FAIFE-CABRERA, Michel. Influence of border effects in the population structure of Coccothrinax litoralis in Cayo Santa María, Villa Clara, Cuba. Ctro. Agr. [online]. 2020, vol.47, n.4, pp. 17-21.  Epub Oct 01, 2020. ISSN 0253-5785.

It was determined the influence of the effect of the border on the population structure of Coccothrinax litoralis León in the coastal xeromorphic thicket and subcoastal on humified sand of Cayo Santa María, Cuba. On June 2019, it was registered the individuals in 12 plots of 10x10 meters at three distances from the edge: 0, 30 and 60 meters. It was found 686 individuals, 602 juveniles and 84 adults. Only the number of individuals in Youth category III was significant, in the intermediate distance. The population structure of C. litoralis shows an expanding pattern. A possible edge effect can only be observed in the Juvenile III category. The population patterns, found in this work, should be taken in account for the sustainable use and conservation of this endemic species.

Keywords : Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago; population categories; fragmentation.
