Abstract

CARO BLAZQUEZ, Mikel. Federico Beltrán Massés (1885-1949). The Painter's Relationship with Cuba from his Childhood to International Success. UH [online]. 2021, n.291  Epub Jan 01, 2021. ISSN 0253-9276.

The main objective of this study is to determine how the painter Federico Beltrán Massés (1885-1949) was influenced by his Cuban roots, regarding to his artworks as well as his diplomatic and social relations. As the sources studied show- especially the family archive and newspaper libraries-, despite moving early to Barcelona, Beltrán had a great affection for the island from his childhood, where he had begun to paint. After his marriage to Irene Narezo and his move to Paris, the painter took advantage of his influential contacts to adopt a diplomatic role, with the aim of strengthening ties between France, Spain and Cuba. However, after successive frustrated attempts, his dream of returning to his native island with an exhibition materialized posthumously with the exhibition organized by the Liceo de La Habana in 1950; a retrospective whose catalogue -unpublished to date- provides important information to identify the painter's works, especially those preserved in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana.
