Abstract

BELTRON CEDENO, Jairo Ramón; HERNANDEZ RABELL, Lourdes María  and  CARRASCO JIMENEZ, Teresa de Jesús. Conceptions of Mathematical Modeling Competence, and a Diagnosis of its Situation in Engineering Degrees. Rev. Cubana Edu. Superior [online]. 2019, vol.38, n.2  Epub Aug 01, 2019. ISSN 0257-4314.

This research was aimed at determining what conception of competence, mathematical competence, and mathematical modeling competence should be adopted in engineering degrees, by examining different views thereon held by distinguished researchers in this field. A diagnosis of to what extent mathematical modeling competence is used in engineering courses at the Technical University of Manabí is made. The results showed that engineering students failed to have this competence to a large extent, and that professors didn’t have the proper methodology to enhance it. This research was also aimed at improving mathematics teaching, by enhancing mathematical modeling competence. For this, teaching activities which help developmental learning in flexible, collaborative environments are needed, as well as technology-mediated interaction putting students in real-life engineering situations through modeling.

Keywords : didactics of mathematics; diagnosis; higher education; mathematical modeling.
