This work deals with the need for competencies to be enhanced, which are acquired while being trained and, also empirically, so one will be able to solve increasingly complex, and global problems. This enhancement should be based on more holistic and humanist concepts of competency and competitiveness. A knowledge-based society demands knowledge systems which will allow people to acquire competencies, so they will be able to survive in an increasingly competitive world. Adopting a dialectical-materialistic approach, the significance of acquiring competencies by Ecuadorian teachers is examined in this work, in order to contribute to innovation- and ethic-based competitiveness in today’s educational context.
