Abstract

In Ecuador, dental education is not organized, or planned, and fails to have regulations. Very few pieces of academic research in this field are carried out, and its network is not normalized. Academic mobility is facing lots of barriers. Additionally, improving its curriculum poses a real challenge, because new and updated textbooks and other materials appear on a daily basis. This paper is aimed at examining the characteristics of dental education in Ecuador, and proposes some changes to it for improvement. Ecuadorian policies on higher education issue guidelines on social engagement of its graduates who should be committed to a model of society which attaches importance to human beings, and considers capital to be contrary to the principle of Buen Vivir or good living.
