Abstract

CASTILLA VALDES, Yanelis. Conservation of phytogenetic resources of coffee-tree (Coffea spp.) by biotechnological methods: an alternative to its preservation. cultrop [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.4, pp. 29-39. ISSN 0258-5936.

At present the rate of loss of the biological diversity worldwide overcomes the happened one in previous periods. The plant species also suffer the effects of the climate change, and need to be suitable to the adaptation. Specifically, the coffee-tree (Coffea spp.), genus that groups some of the species from which it is obtained one of the most valued national and international beverage, does not escape to these challenges. For that reason, different strategies have been developed for its ex-situ preservation, due to the difficulties that exist in relation with its traditional conservation. To know a bit more about the different biotechnological methods that facilitate the conservation of phytogenetic resources of coffee-tree, from medium to long period, we will go deep into the present article, from a biological point of view.

Keywords : Coffea spp; conservation; in vitro culture; growth; cryopreservation.
