ABSTRACT

Dendrobium spp cultivars are the fourth most sold floricultural products, after the palms, Dracaena spp and Anthurium spp. This work shows the main characteristics of a new cultivar of Dendrobium, ´Jaicate´. This is the result of cross-pollination between Dendrobium ´Queen South East´ and Dendrobium ´Jacquelyn Thomas´. It was registered in Sander´s list and it was published in the Royal Horticultural Society of England database, in Orchids Review Supplement.

Key words: hybrids; orchids; manual pollination

INTRODUCTION

Dendrobium plants belonging to the Phalaenanthe section are generally called "Phalaenopsis type". This group has terminal and subterminal inflorescences, mainly with quite large and showy flowers of various colours. Genetic improvement has allowed this section to be part of the most cultivated orchids group in the world and its hybrids of various shapes, colours and sizes, give this genus great commercial importance at the international level.
