Lectins are an interesting group of proteins of nonimmune origin that have the common property of binding in a specific and reversible way to carbohydrates, whether they are free or part of more complex structures. They have at least 2 binding sites that allow them to bind first to a specific sugar and then to a glycosylated molecule. They have interesting properties that turn this type of proteins into very valuable tools for biological laboratories, since they may be used in several investigations including the study of membrane structure, the detection of malignant transformations, the purification of glycoconjugates and the cytogenetic studies. They are also utilized in histochemical and enzymatic assays and in blood typing
