A retrospective study of the characteristics of the personality and of the psychopathological elements was conducted in a group of 38 patients with relative polycythemia (RP) based on the new classification of normovolemic and hypovolemic RP. These patients were diagsed and attended at the Institute of Hematology and Immunology. No significant differences of the psychological scales were found between the total of hypovolemic patients and the total of normovolemic patients, although there were differences between those patients with extreme values of the hematological variables. The patients with the highest figures of hematocrits were described as more rigid, hostile and impulsive, with tendency to action and propensity to give an image of accentuates masculinity. Those subjects with the lowest values of plasmatic index appear as more dynamic, energetic and determined, with tendency to a greater defensive attitude before the exploration of their psychological area as a result of his intention to offer an image of socially desirable traits. The subgroups of patients with the highest values of volemia proved to be less introspective and quiet and more inclined to be more impulsive, expressive and enthusiatic. The results confirmed the association of the psychological aspects with this disease
