Abstract

Chronic renal disease is a global health problem that frequently leads to chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) requiring renal replacement therapy either by dialysis or renal transplantation. A recent report showed a high frequency of HLA-A*68 in patients undergoing CRI. This result contrasted with HLA characterization of Cuban population previously reported. A retrospective study to determine the possible association between HLA-A*68 and CRI was carried out by analyzing previous HLA typing of 410 patients on dialysis from western and central regions of Cuba, and 322 hematopoietic stem cells donors and solid organ cadaveric donorsfrom the same regions. Patients and controls were typed using the low resolution kit Olerup SSP® HLA-A-B-DR-DQ SSP (Olerup, Germany). Allelic frequencies were estimated by EM algorithm with the software Arlequin 3.5. Comparison of allele frequencies between groups was carried out by Χ2 test with Yates’ correction with the software Statistical 8.0. The frequency of expression of gene HLA-A*68 was 0.060 in CRI patients and 0.051 in controls, without statistical differences between groups (p = 0.590). The expression of gen HLA-A*68 may not be associated with CRI susceptibility in patients from western and central regions of Cuba.
