Abstract
ZORRILLA GARCIA, Adonis E.. El envejecimiento y el estrés oxidativo. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2002, vol.21, n.3, pp. 178-185. ISSN 1561-3011.
A review on the physiological changes occurring in aging that cause the development of chronic diseases was made. Free radicals are highly reactive potent oxidants that are in balance with the antioxidant systems. With aging, the tissue levels of antioxidants decrease, allowing the free radicals to react with those molecules of biological importance for the organism. Reference is made in this paper to some physical changes that appear with age, as well as to some characteristics that show the relationship between aging and free radicals. Some of the biological actions of the oxygen free radicals on molecules such as glucides, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, are also mentioned.
