Abstract

CRUZ MANZANO, Elio; SANFIEL VASSEUR, Loida  and  PALACIO OMAR, Maceo. Oxidative stress and essential hypertension: a clinical reality. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2004, vol.23, n.3, pp. 190-196. ISSN 1561-3011.

Some of the main studies were presented and the results confirming the relation existing between oxidative stress and essential arterial hypertension were discussed, starting from oxidative damage indicators, from the antioxidant defenses, as well as from their responses to some antioxidants and to other factors involved in the origin of oxidative stress, which is a state where there is an imbalance among the species of high oxidizing power and the antioxidant defense systems of the organism. Nowadays, the oxidative stress appears as one of the various metabolic disorders described in essential arterial hypertension. It has been proved that it is involved both in the endothelial dysfunction and in the hypertrophy of vascular smooth muscular cells. There are strong evidences that a disorder in the vasodilation depending on the endothelium may be the primary phenomenon

Keywords : Oxidative stress; essential arterial hypertension; freee radicals; nitric oxide; nitric oxide zytases; NADPH oxidase; angiotensin II; lipid peroxidation; antioxidants; antioxidants nonenzimatic.
