Abstract

A study of 214 patients, who were discharged from hospital and histopathologically diagnosed with acute appendicitis by the General Surgery Service of "Comandante Pinares" general teaching hospital in San Cristóbal, Pinar del Río province in 2004, was conducted. Thirty three were females and 181 males; 30.8 % was older people. Pain, vomiting and fever prevailed in their preoperative clinical picture. Leukogram was positive in 69.1 % of patients. Suppurated anatomopathological form was the most found variation. Thirteen percent of operated patients presented with complications, being wound infection the predominant.
