Abstract

A descriptive-prospective study was performed from March 1998-1999 to explore the main medical, social, work and economic problems of the people presented with the so called "caregiver" syndrome in a specific population seen at "Marta Abreu" Teaching Polyclinics since the caregiver for the aged, according to some authors, is actually a hidden or unknown patient. For collecting information, a direct survey designed for these purposes was applied, which included a number of variables such as: how frequently medical, physical, psychical alterations occur and their relation with the degree of kinship as well as the main social, work, and economic problems faced by the "caregiver" in his/her daily work. We arrived at the conclusion that the "caregiver for the aged" suffers from various personal, psychical, social and physical alterations that affect his/her personal and family lives and also the person he/she is caring for; and this could turn him/her into a patient at any time.
