Cardiac surgery has experienced an astonishing development in the last ten years; it shows better results thanks to a number of factors such as improvement and reinforcement of diagnostic techniques (cardiac catheterism), improvement of surgical techniques (formation of the surgical team), design and manufacture of prosthetic valves; improvements in extracorporeal circulation and the quality of postoperative care not only in the material but also in the personal aspect, by the medical and the nursing staff since they are the ones that spend most of the time next to the patient after surgery. This advances are reflected in the fact that the operated patient stays only 2 or 3 days at the Intensive Care Unit and afterwards, he/she is transferred to the hospital wards. The nursing staff plays a very important role in the cardiac surgery, as a piece of this great puzzle covering from the time the patient is admitted to Unit up to his/her discharge. In cardiac surgery, the operated patient should be extremely looked after by the nursing staff during the first 24 hours including the management of clinical signs such as blood pressure, temperature, arrythmias, drainages, etc.
