A retrospective, cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out in the medical service area of "Dr Ambrosio Grillo Portuondo" hospital to examine some characteristics of smoking, as this is a well-known predisposing factor for heart diseases. This study was conducted from January to July 1999. There was an average of 24 patients of both sexes in the 41-50 age group for 40 %. Workers, housewives and students were the groups with the highest prevalence of smokers despite the fact that they had high school and university educational levels.
