Abstract

HERNANDEZ, A.; PEREZ, A.  and  OJEDA, F.. Morphoagronomic characterization of two red-grain varieties of Sorghum bicolor L. Moench. Pastos y Forrajes [online]. 2014, vol.37, n.3, pp. 279-283. ISSN 0864-0394.

A study was conducted on a Ferralitic Red soil, in order to characterize morphoagronomically two red-grain varieties of Sorghum bicolor L. Moench (CIAP-132R and CIAP-9E-95). The sowing was performed in September, in plots of nine rows, at a distance of 0,75 m between rows and 0,07 m between plants; the dose was 10 kg of basic seed per hectare, and each variety had an experimental area of 0,14 ha. During plant sowing, establishment and growth, neither irrigation nor fertilization was applied. Ten subplots (0,75 x 1 m), randomly distributed, were sampled, and the following traits were measured: height, stem diameter, ear size, ear weight (green and dry), and grain production. The grain harvest and threshing were manually made. The var. CIAP-132R had the highest ear dry weight (0,38 kg) and the highest grain yield (1,92 t/ha), and was significantly higher than var. CIAP-9E-95 (0,23 kg and 1,7 t/ha, respectively). It is concluded that var. CIAP-132R showed better perspectives for grain production under the trial conditions, and to continue studies linked to the agrotechnical management is recommended in order to achieve higher yields.
